AI stock analysis you can question and verify

AI stock analysis uses artificial intelligence to help interpret information about a company or security. A useful workflow makes the underlying evidence easier to inspect. It should help you ask better questions, preserve missing information and distinguish a reported fact from an interpretation. This guide offers a practical way to review generated research.

Begin with the limits of generated information

The SEC, NASAA and FINRA warn that AI-generated investment information can be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated or fabricated, even when its inputs are accurate. They advise checking underlying sources and caution against claims of guaranteed returns. Fluent language and confident phrasing do not establish that an answer is correct.

Use AI output as a set of claims to investigate. Before accepting a conclusion, identify the evidence it depends on and the question it actually answers. A summary of last year’s filing cannot establish today’s valuation without additional current inputs.

Separate facts, calculations and interpretations

Our review framework divides a research note into three layers. Labeling the layer helps you choose the right check: open a source for a fact, reproduce arithmetic for a calculation, and examine assumptions for an interpretation. One paragraph can contain all three, so review individual claims when necessary.

Give the research task a clear boundary

Begin with a specific company, period and question. ‘Explain the change in operating margin in this annual filing’ is easier to verify than ‘find a winning stock.’ Supply the document you intend to analyze, and state whether outside sources are allowed. If the tool cannot access the document, ask it to say so.

Ask for source locations beside important claims. A link to a homepage is insufficient when the answer asserts a precise financial number. Open the cited document yourself and check that the referenced passage supports the claim, rather than merely discussing the same company.

Read the source around the cited passage. Footnotes can change the interpretation through units, restatements, segment changes or definitions. If two sources disagree, preserve the difference until you understand the reason. Do not choose the number that best fits the original thesis.

  • Define the task: company, reporting period, question and allowed documents.
  • Request a structured answer: source facts, calculations, assumptions and missing evidence.
  • Open each material citation and check the exact document location.
  • Recalculate any number that materially affects the conclusion.
  • Record unresolved issues and the evidence required to resolve them.

Try a prompt designed for verification

Use this template with a filing you have selected: ‘Using only the supplied document, explain how this company makes money and identify the factors affecting its reported results. Give the document section for each material factual claim. Separate reported figures, your calculations and interpretations. State the currency, units and reporting period. List information you cannot find. Do not invent missing values or issue a buy or sell recommendation.’

Follow with a challenge: ‘Which statement in your answer has the weakest support? What evidence could contradict your interpretation? Show the inputs and formula for each calculation.’ These questions can expose weaknesses, but the model’s self-check remains something you must verify.

Check the common sources of numerical confusion

Financial comparisons can fail without an arithmetic error. A correct calculation using inconsistent definitions still answers the wrong question. Create a small audit trail for the numbers that drive the conclusion rather than attempting to preserve every sentence the tool produces.

A research explanation is not evidence of predictive accuracy

If a tool advertises forecasting performance, ask how that performance was measured. What was predicted, over which dates and against which benchmark? Were the rules fixed before the observation period? Were transaction costs, failed signals and unavailable stocks included? These are evaluation questions, not proof that any particular tool will succeed or fail.

A plausible explanation after a price move is different from a forecast recorded before it. Keep those records separate. Likewise, a scenario describes an assumption and a possible outcome; it does not establish the probability of that outcome unless a method and supporting evidence are provided.
